Okay, now I get it. For a while there I thought the Bears were just having a bad season. For a while there I thought they were just plain bad. Now it all makes sense. How could I have been so stupid. It's clear to me now that somebody has spiked the Bears collective Kool-Aid, and it's been going on for quite some time.
First it was Lovie Smith and his breaking up the season into quarters, of course that stopped when the second quarter began with two straight losses. Then it was Brian Urlacher and his fondness of the Kyle Orton style of football. Now it's Lance Briggs and his belief that the Bears haven't "struggled all year."
What a relief.
Today when I Lance Briggs spoke to Zack Zaidman of 670 The Score he had this to say:
"I wouldn't say we've struggled all year.
I don't think we've played a complete game. We've had some bad games, Arizona, Cincinnati," said Briggs. The Minnesota Vikings loss where we were on the field on [83] plays.
I believe that defensively we've put our team in positions to score and give ourselves chances to win."
Do you get what I'm saying now? There is no way he could possibly believe any of those statements, aside from the one about not playing a complete game. Let's review.
Week 1: Actually a good defensive game against the Packers. Held them to just over 200 yards of offense. They did give the team a chance to win. Cutler has four picks and the D falls asleep in the final minutes. I'm listening Lance.
Week 2: A win over the Steelers who at that point had not found a running game. Not the Bears problem. I'm still listening Lance.
Week 3: A win over the Matt Hasselbeck-less Seahawks. Again not the Bears problem. They hold Seattle to 346 yards! With Seneca Wallace at QB! You're losing me Lance.
Week 4: The Lions come to town and for one half they make this interesting, until their own defense falls apart. Matt Stafford throws for nearly 300 yards before leaving the game with an injury. Lions gain 398 yards of offense. Uh, Lance.
Week 5: Atlanta. Some good D here actually. The Falcons are held to 253 yards of offense and the Bears have a chance to win late, but don't.
Week 6: Bengals. Need I recap this one. 31-3 at the half and 448 yards of offense for the Bengals.
Week 7: The Bears beat the Browns. Cough.
Week 8: Arizona scores 31 before halftime and racks up 438 yards of offense. Cutler keeps them in game with 369-yards and three touchdowns. Lance?
Week 9: This one is on Cutler, right? Five picks. Defense did play well here, but it was the 49ers, with Alex Smith at QB.
Week 10: Philadelphia. Eagles go for 377 yards of offense and while the Bears are in this to the end, it is the defense that looks like a seive on the final Eagles drive.
Week 11: Just days ago the Bears defense is shredded for 537 yards!
To sum up: The Bears played some good D this season, against the middle of the pack teams or lower, and even that is not completely true. Against the contenders, they were man handled, literally. I think they have grounds for a sexual assault case on Jared Allen.
The Bears rank 18th in total defense, 14th against the pass, 24th against the run, 24th in points allowed, 30th in third down conversion percentage.
So whether it's Lovie telling me that it was turnovers that killed them against the Vikings, or that they are a running team and something about a bus. Or whether it is Urlacher who prefers the Orkman-style of football, or Khalil Bell breaking off the Bears longest run in 20 years and then not touching the ball the following week, or converted D-backs turn wide receivers, or Cutler asking for more Aromashadou and getting none, or the continued use of the WR screen with press coverage, or the continued hiring of coaches with no experience at their given profession, or the completely incompetent drafting over the last five years that has left this team in a bigger hole than any trade could have, I now know this.
The organization is all on drugs.

Thank you for pointing out not checking out of a WR screen when there's press coverage. I've been beating my head against the wall with that one for awhile now. Not sure if that's Cutler not checking, or if Ron doesn't have a check available for him. My guess is the latter.
